Bukchon Hanok Village – Living Tradition in the Heart of Seoul

Right in the center of Seoul, amidst tall modern buildings, lies a quiet neighborhood with beautiful tiled roofs—Bukchon Hanok Village. This place is where tradition meets modernity, not just a sightseeing spot, but a living village where people still reside.
I visited Bukchon Hanok Village yesterday (June 8, 2025), and I’d love to share my experience.

1. What is Bukchon Hanok Village?

Bukchon is a traditional residential area nestled between Gyeongbokgung Palace, Changdeokgung Palace, and Jongmyo Shrine. Home to hundreds of hanok (traditional Korean houses), this village has preserved its charm for centuries. The area is also filled with cultural assets, folk materials, and historic sites, earning it the nickname, "an open-air museum in the city."

The name “Bukchon,” which literally means “North Village,” comes from its location north of Cheonggyecheon Stream and Jongno. Even the name itself carries centuries of history.

2. How to Get to Bukchon

Bukchon Hanok Village is just a 5-minute walk from Anguk Station (Line 3), Exit 2. Since it's located in the center of Seoul, it's very accessible. As soon as you leave the station, you'll notice a crowd of tourists heading toward Bukchon.

3. Things to Do in Bukchon

🌸 Wear Hanbok and Stroll Through the Village
You can rent a beautiful hanbok (traditional Korean outfit) and walk through the narrow alleys. Men can try on warrior-style outfits, while women can wear elegant dresses. It's the perfect way to take stunning photos with the hanok houses as a backdrop.

🏠 Explore the Interiors of Open Hanoks

Don't just admire the houses from outside. Some hanoks are open to the public, giving you a chance to step inside and experience how Koreans lived in the past.

Take a break in a hanok-style tea house and enjoy a warm cup of Korean traditional tea. It's a moment of calm where you can appreciate both the taste and the ambiance.

🍚 Try Korean Traditional Dishes
Near Bukchon, you'll find many authentic Korean restaurants. Treat yourself to dishes like bibimbap, Korean pancakes (jeon), or rice cakes (tteok).

4. Tips for Visiting Bukchon

🔇 Be Respectful and Quiet
Bukchon is not just a tourist attraction—it’s a residential neighborhood. Please avoid speaking loudly or causing disturbances.

🚫 Check Restricted Hours
Some alleys are closed to the public from 5:00 PM to 10:00 AM the next day. However, the main roads and outer areas remain accessible.

If you're looking for a time-travel experience in the middle of Seoul, there's no better place than Bukchon Hanok Village.
Unlike Gangnam or Hongdae, Bukchon tends to attract more families and visitors looking for a quieter, more cultural experience. Step away from the fast pace of the city, and soak in the serenity and beauty of Korean tradition.
