Hongdae KT&G Sangsangmadang Scenery (July 2025)

Hello everyone! Today, I'd like to introduce you to the July 2025 scenery of KT&G Sangsangmadang, the vibrant heart and complex cultural arts space of Hongdae Street. I'll share my own photos along with details about Hongdae Street, various aspects of Sangsangmadang, and the unmissable Hongdae busking scene.

Hongdae: The Lively Street of Youth

Hongdae is a district formed around Hongik University in Mapo-gu, Seoul, overflowing with youth, art, and free spirits. The streets are lined with unique cafes, restaurants, and fashion select shops, while distinctive murals and sculptures add even more color to the atmosphere. Especially on weekends, countless people flock here, and you can feel Hongdae's unique, hot energy in the bustling crowd. When I visited in early July, many people were strolling the streets, enjoying Hongdae's lively ambiance.

KT&G Sangsangmadang: A Hub of Culture and Art

As you walk along Hongdae Street, the uniquely designed building that immediately catches your eye is KT&G Sangsangmadang. Opened in 2007, Sangsangmadang means "a space that creates imagination," and it is a complex cultural arts space operated by KT&G. True to its name, it has established itself as a place that stimulates imagination by encompassing various art genres.

When I visited, the phrase '20TH ANNY' was prominently displayed on the building's exterior, indicating that Sangsangmadang was celebrating its 20th anniversary. The entire building was utilized like a giant canvas, with colorful paintings and numbers that captivated the eye.

Sangsangmadang consists of 11 floors, from B4 to 7F, with various spaces on each floor including a cinema, design square, gallery, live hall, studios, and an academy. Visitors can watch independent films, browse or purchase unique and practical design products, and discover new artworks through various exhibitions. Furthermore, the live hall constantly hosts performances by indie bands, and the academy offers diverse art-related educational programs, providing opportunities for people of all ages to experience and enjoy art.

Hongdae Busking: Artists on the Street

One thing that cannot be left out when talking about Hongdae is 'busking.' In front of Sangsangmadang and throughout Hongdae Street, numerous buskers showcase their talents and interact with citizens. From sweet melodies to powerful dances, magic, and various performances, the entire street feels like one giant concert venue.

When I visited, several buskers were giving passionate performances, and many people stopped to clap and cheer for their shows. In particular, the area in front of Sangsangmadang is one of the famous busking spots, where the building itself serves as a backdrop, enhancing the viewing experience. Busking is also a symbol that represents Hongdae's free and vibrant culture.

When people ask where to feel the heartbeat of youth in Seoul,
Hongdae is always near the top of the list.

This vibrant neighborhood is a hub of creativity, fashion, music, K-beauty, and freedom—
a place where Korea's younger generation expresses itself openly on the streets.

Why Is Hongdae So Popular?

The name “Hongdae” comes from Hongik University,
one of Korea’s most famous art schools.

  → Take the Airport Railroad Express (AREX / Blue Line)
  → Get off at Hongdae Station (Hongik Univ. Station)

• From downtown Seoul
  → Take Subway Line 2 (Green Line)
  → Get off at Hongdae Station

The station connects directly to the main shopping streets,
so you can start exploring as soon as you step outside.

Whether you come for coffee, shopping, music, or people-watching,
there’s always something happening here.
