Morning: Start your day at the heart of Seoul, Gyeongbokgung Palace. It's where you can feel the dignity and beauty of the Joseon Dynasty. If you're lucky, you might even witness the changing of the guard ceremony. It truly feels like a trip back in time. Lunch: Savor a delightful hanjeongsik (Korean full-course meal) at a restaurant near the palace, experiencing the authentic taste of Korean tradition. Afternoon: Head to Bukchon Hanok Village, nestled right beside Gyeongbokgung. As you walk through the winding alleyways, traditional hanok houses will greet you, making it feel as if time has stood still. Why not enjoy some traditional tea at a charming cafe or rent a hanbok (traditional Korean attire) for some memorable photos? Evening: Explore trendy galleries in Samcheong-dong, close to Bukchon, then enjoy dinner at a cozy restaurant. This neighborhood boasts a romantic atmosphere that's different from the daytime.

Lunch: Choose from the countless delicious eateries in Hongdae to suit your taste. From bunsik (Korean snack foods) to fusion cuisine, the options are incredibly diverse. Afternoon: Stroll through Hongdae's streets, enjoy busking performances, and browse the unique shops. It's fun to discover charming little boutiques or K-Pop merchandise stores. Take a walk through the nearby Ewha Womans University campus to experience its historic architecture and vibrant university atmosphere. Evening: Enjoy a night out at one of Hongdae's hip pubs or rooftop bars. With live music, your time will be even more special.

Morning: Finally, we head to Gwangjang Market, which I recently visited! It's where you can feel the true pulse of Seoul. Be ready to be swept away by the lively market atmosphere. Lunch: If you're at Gwangjang Market, Bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) and Mayak Gimbap (drug gimbap) are an absolute must! There's nothing better than a warm Bindaetteok with a glass of makgeolli (rice wine). Don't miss the chewy Tteokbokki and warm Eomuk either. Afternoon: Explore deeper into the market alleys, Browse colorful textiles, hanbok, and traditional Korean crafts like Najeonchilgi (mother-of-pearl lacquerware). You'll have fun discovering items infused with the life stories of the market vendors. Don't forget to take a walk along Cheonggyecheon Stream right next to the market. Evening: As night falls, visit the Dongdaemun Design Plaza (DDP) and Dongdaemun Fashion Town, which transform with dazzling lights. Lunch: Find a stylish restaurant near Gangnam Station or Garosu-gil for brunch or lunch. Afternoon: Stroll down Garosu-gil, Browse charming boutique shops, trendy cafes, and the latest fashion items. If you love to shop, allocate plenty of time here! Afterwards, move to the Han River, a beloved resting place and pride of Seoul citizens. Evening: Take a leisurely walk along the Han River or rent a bicycle to feel the refreshing breeze. The Han River at sunset, bathed in golden light, is truly a spectacular sight. Ordering chicken or pizza via a delivery app to enjoy "chimaek" (chicken + beer) by the river is the best way to experience it like a true Korean!

Morning: Start your day in Itaewon, where diversity and freedom coexist. You'll feel a unique atmosphere where various global cultures blend seamlessly. Lunch: Itaewon boasts an incredible array of international restaurants. Why not try an exotic dish you might not usually encounter today?

Afternoon: Explore Itaewon's alleys, discovering unique shops, antique furniture streets, and small artist galleries. Afterwards, head to Seoul's landmark, Namsan Tower (N Seoul Tower). Taking the cable car up will offer you a magnificent panoramic view of the Seoul cityscape. It's also a great spot to hang a 'love lock' and create cherished memories. Evening: Enjoy a romantic final dinner at a restaurant near Namsan Tower, admiring Seoul's nightscape, or head down to Myeongdong to conclude your trip with delicious street food in its lively streets.

I live by the Han River in Seoul. Amidst the familiar landscape of towering skyscrapers and apartment complexes, there are places where Korea's tradition and history still breathe. And Gwangjang Market, which I visited yesterday, was one of those places where I could feel the pulse of Seoul most closely.

Gwangjang Market: Past and Present

Gwangjang Market first opened in 1905, making it Korea's oldest permanent market. It was born from the desire of Koreans to protect their economic rights during the Japanese colonial period, a time when Japanese merchants were trying to take control. From its beginnings, Gwangjang Market has been a livelihood and a place of comfort for Seoul citizens for generations.

The moment you step into Gwangjang Market, it feels like you're traveling back in time. The sights that unfold before your eyes, the scents that waft through the air, and the lively sounds that tickle your ears—everything becomes a special experience.

You can't talk about Gwangjang Market without mentioning its food. The savory smells wafting from the shops lining the bustling food alley stop you in your tracks. In particular, Bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) is practically a symbol of Gwangjang Market. These thick, golden-brown pancakes are a fantastic match for makgeolli (rice wine). And the addictive Mayak Gimbap (drug gimbap), seasoned with a savory sauce, makes it impossible to stop at just one. You can taste the essence of Korean street food here, including chewy Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), warm Eomuk (fish cakes), and sweet and spicy Sundae (blood sausage). The refreshing and spicy Dae-gu Maeuntang (spicy codfish stew) also offers an unforgettable flavor.

In particular, stores like Hanguk Gimulsangsa, selling all sorts of goods, offered a glimpse into old Korean charm, and I was once again captivated by the beauty of our traditional crafts at the shimmering Najeonchilgi (mother-of-pearl lacquerware) workshop.

Here, you can catch glimpses of the lives of Koreans, passed down from our grandparents' generation to today. Many of the shop owners are elderly, their faces etched with years of experience. As you listen to their stories embedded in each item and the lively laughter of passersby, Gwangjang Market feels less like just a market and more like a living museum.
