Hongdae KT&G Sangsangmadang Scenery (July 2025)

Hello everyone! Today, I'd like to introduce you to the July 2025 scenery of KT&G Sangsangmadang, the vibrant heart and complex cultural arts space of Hongdae Street. I'll share my own photos along with details about Hongdae Street, various aspects of Sangsangmadang, and the unmissable Hongdae busking scene.

The front of the Sangsangmadang building, isn't it cool?)

Hongdae: The Lively Street of Youth

Hongdae is a district formed around Hongik University in Mapo-gu, Seoul, overflowing with youth, art, and free spirits. The streets are lined with unique cafes, restaurants, and fashion select shops, while distinctive murals and sculptures add even more color to the atmosphere. Especially on weekends, countless people flock here, and you can feel Hongdae's unique, hot energy in the bustling crowd. When I visited in early July, many people were strolling the streets, enjoying Hongdae's lively ambiance.

The path to Sangsangmadang, with drawings on the street, creates a fantastic atmosphere.)

KT&G Sangsangmadang: A Hub of Culture and Art

As you walk along Hongdae Street, the uniquely designed building that immediately catches your eye is KT&G Sangsangmadang. Opened in 2007, Sangsangmadang means "a space that creates imagination," and it is a complex cultural arts space operated by KT&G. True to its name, it has established itself as a place that stimulates imagination by encompassing various art genres.

Hongdae street fashion is so hot it can blow away the summer heat.)

When I visited, the phrase '20TH ANNY' was prominently displayed on the building's exterior, indicating that Sangsangmadang was celebrating its 20th anniversary. The entire building was utilized like a giant canvas, with colorful paintings and numbers that captivated the eye.

The area in front of the Sangsangmadang building is always full of people waiting for and meeting others.)

Sangsangmadang consists of 11 floors, from B4 to 7F, with various spaces on each floor including a cinema, design square, gallery, live hall, studios, and an academy. Visitors can watch independent films, browse or purchase unique and practical design products, and discover new artworks through various exhibitions. Furthermore, the live hall constantly hosts performances by indie bands, and the academy offers diverse art-related educational programs, providing opportunities for people of all ages to experience and enjoy art.

Hongdae Busking: Artists on the Street

One thing that cannot be left out when talking about Hongdae is 'busking.' In front of Sangsangmadang and throughout Hongdae Street, numerous buskers showcase their talents and interact with citizens. From sweet melodies to powerful dances, magic, and various performances, the entire street feels like one giant concert venue.

When you think of Hongdae, you think of busking. This particular busking performance was filmed previously.)

When I visited, several buskers were giving passionate performances, and many people stopped to clap and cheer for their shows. In particular, the area in front of Sangsangmadang is one of the famous busking spots, where the building itself serves as a backdrop, enhancing the viewing experience. Busking is also a symbol that represents Hongdae's free and vibrant culture.

It seems like a famous YouTuber's busking performance; it was being filmed and was quite entertaining.)

Hongdae Sangsangmadang is not just a building; it's an important space that represents Hongdae's culture and art. If you love art and seek new experiences, I highly recommend visiting Hongdae Sangsangmadang to feel its special atmosphere firsthand. For now, please enjoy the 'Sangsangmadang that creates imagination' through my photos!

Gwangjang Market Seoul: Your Essential Guide to Authentic Korean Food & Culture

Gwangjang Market Entrance, there are several entrances to Gwangjang Market.)

I live by the Han River in Seoul. Amidst the familiar landscape of towering skyscrapers and apartment complexes, there are places where Korea's tradition and history still breathe. And Gwangjang Market, which I visited yesterday, was one of those places where I could feel the pulse of Seoul most closely.

Euljiro 4-ga Station, Gwangjang Market is within walking distance from Euljiro 4-ga Station.)

    Gwangjang Market: Past and Present

Gwangjang Market first opened in 1905, making it Korea's oldest permanent market. It was born from the desire of Koreans to protect their economic rights during the Japanese colonial period, a time when Japanese merchants were trying to take control. From its beginnings, Gwangjang Market has been a livelihood and a place of comfort for Seoul citizens for generations.

Another Entrance to Gwangjang Market, there is a sign that says 'Korea's First Permanent Market'.)

Information Guides at Gwangjang Market, you can ask them anything you're curious about (like restrooms))

In recent years, Gwangjang Market has also become a must-visit spot for foreigners coming to Korea. It likely gained even more fame after being featured in the Seoul episode of the Netflix documentary, 'Street Food'. For international visitors, it's a special place to experience the sights, sounds, and tastes of Korean street food and the vibrant market atmosphere. Seeing the red-clad guides smiling brightly under the Gwangjang Market sign, I was reminded of how much this place is loved by so many.

Crowds in Gwangjang Market's Food Alley, it's always bustling with people.)

Gwangjang Market: A Feast for the Senses

The moment you step into Gwangjang Market, it feels like you're traveling back in time. The sights that unfold before your eyes, the scents that waft through the air, and the lively sounds that tickle your ears—everything becomes a special experience.

    An Endless Feast of Food

Famous Bindaetteok (Mung Bean Pancake) Restaurants, be sure to try them when you come.)

You can't talk about Gwangjang Market without mentioning its food. The savory smells wafting from the shops lining the bustling food alley stop you in your tracks. In particular, Bindaetteok (mung bean pancake) is practically a symbol of Gwangjang Market. These thick, golden-brown pancakes are a fantastic match for makgeolli (rice wine). And the addictive Mayak Gimbap (drug gimbap), seasoned with a savory sauce, makes it impossible to stop at just one. You can taste the essence of Korean street food here, including chewy Tteokbokki (spicy rice cakes), warm Eomuk (fish cakes), and sweet and spicy Sundae (blood sausage). The refreshing and spicy Dae-gu Maeuntang (spicy codfish stew) also offers an unforgettable flavor.

Diverse Goods, Filled with Life Stories

A Store Selling Everything, if you take your time to look around, you'll be surprised by the variety of goods.)

Gwangjang Market isn't just about food. Just a short walk from the food alleys, another world unfolds. From textile shops with their vibrant colors to Hanbok (traditional Korean dress) stores bustling with activity before holidays, fresh seafood at fish restaurants, and the healthy aura of red ginseng shops, it's like an everything-under-the-sun marketplace. In particular, stores like Hanguk Gimulsangsa, selling all sorts of goods, offered a glimpse into old Korean charm, and I was once again captivated by the beauty of our traditional crafts at the shimmering Najeonchilgi (mother-of-pearl lacquerware) workshop.

A Famous Red Ginseng Store, you can buy red ginseng to gift to acquaintances.)

Here, you can catch glimpses of the lives of Koreans, passed down from our grandparents' generation to today. Many of the shop owners are elderly, their faces etched with years of experience. As you listen to their stories embedded in each item and the lively laughter of passersby, Gwangjang Market feels less like just a market and more like a living museum.

A Crossroads Inside the Market, you can see an even more crowded scene where several alleys meet.)

Seoul is a rapidly developing city. Yet, amidst this fast-changing landscape, Gwangjang Market remains a special place where you can feel the unchanging warmth and vibrancy of Korea. If you want to experience the true essence of Korea, be sure to visit Gwangjang Market. Like me, you'll fall completely in love with its charm!

Cheonggyecheon Stream Walkway, be sure to also check out Cheonggyecheon Stream, which is located right next to the market.)

Bibimbap: Korea’s Healthy Mixed Rice Bowl You’ll Love

A beautifully plated traditional bibimbap in a brass bowl, as commonly served in Jeonju, Korea.
Traditional bibimbap served in a brass bowl — this is how it's often presented in Jeonju, the birthplace of bibimbap.)

    Korean Food Story Bibimbap

     1. The Origin of Bibimbap

Bibimbap literally means "mixed rice" a traditional Korean dish where various ingredients are mixed together with rice.

Though its exact origin is uncertain, one widely accepted theory is that it came from the custom of mixing leftover food after ancestral rites during the Joseon Dynasty.

A bowl of bibimbap reflects the Korean spirit of balance and harmony, with all its diverse ingredients coming together in a single dish.

    2. The Fame of Jeonju Bibimbap

Among the many varieties of bibimbap, Jeonju Bibimbap is the most renowned.

As someone born in Jeonju, I grew up loving and feeling proud of this dish.

A full bibimbap meal served at Gajok Hoegwan, a well-known restaurant in Jeonju specializing in traditional bibimbap.
Bibimbap set meal from Gajok Hoegwan, a famous bibimbap restaurant in Jeonju.)

Jeonju has long been known as a city of culinary and artistic tradition. Jeonju-style bibimbap is famous for its colorful presentation and more than 30 ingredients that captivate the taste buds of people around the world.

In places like Jeonju Hanok Village or Nambu Market, you can enjoy bibimbap served beautifully in a ceramic bowl rich in both flavor and tradition.

    3. Bibimbap as a Nutritious and Diet-Friendly Meal

Bibimbap is not only visually beautiful, but also highly nutritious.

With a balanced mix of grains, vegetables, protein, egg, and gochujang (Korean chili paste), it's a well-rounded meal in a single bowl.

In recent years, it has gained popularity as a diet or clean-eating food.

Former U.S. President Bill Clinton is known to have enjoyed bibimbap after switching to a plant-based diet.

Many Hollywood actors have also mentioned bibimbap as part of the trending "Korean food diet."

    4. Enjoying Bibimbap in Korea

In Korea, bibimbap is widely available from Korean restaurants and specialized bibimbap shops to convenience store lunchboxes and even airline meals.

The amount of gochujang can be adjusted, and for those who prefer less spice, there are soy sauce-based variations as well.

Whether in Seoul’s Insadong, a traditional hanok cafe in Gyeongju, or even a small countryside eatery, you can enjoy bibimbap prepared in unique and local ways.

    5. Making Bibimbap at Home

Bibimbap is surprisingly easy to make.

With just a few basic ingredients, anyone can prepare a delicious and healthy meal.

    Basic ingredients:

Cooked rice (white or mixed grain)

Seasoned vegetables (like spinach, fernbrake, bellflower root)

Vegetables such as carrots, zucchini, bean sprouts

    Stir-fried beef or tofu

    Fried or soft-boiled egg

Gochujang, sesame oil, and sesame seeds

    How to make it:

Blanch or stir-fry each ingredient separately.

Place the cooked rice in a bowl and arrange the ingredients neatly on top.

Add the egg in the center, and serve with gochujang and sesame oil.

Mix well before eating and enjoy!

Because the ingredients can be easily customized, bibimbap works well for vegetarians, meat lovers, and even picky eaters.

Making individual-style bibimbap with family can also be a fun and meaningful mealtime experience.

    6. Enjoying Bibimbap Abroad With Meal Kits and Local Options

Even outside Korea, there are many ways to enjoy bibimbap.

    At Korean Restaurants

In major cities like New York, London, and Paris, bibimbap can be found on the menu of most Korean restaurants.

Bibimbap sold at a casual restaurant in New York — Korean food is becoming more global.)

Those sensitive to spicy food can simply use less gochujang or opt for a soy-based version.

Using Asian Markets or Korean Grocery Stores

Many essential ingredients like gochujang, sesame oil, and even seasoned vegetables can be found at Asian supermarkets.

Fresh vegetables like spinach, bean sprouts, and carrots are also easy to find locally making bibimbap very accessible.

    Using Bibimbap Meal Kits

Packaged bibimbap meal kits found in a Canadian supermarket, designed for quick home preparation.
Bibimbap meal kits sold in Canada — though many say it’s hard to match the authentic Korean flavor.)

Recently, bibimbap meal kits have become available overseas.

These kits include pre-portioned ingredients, making it easy to recreate authentic Korean flavors at home with minimal effort.

Look for them at Korean markets or online with search terms like “Bibimbap kit” or “Korean meal kit.”

    Ingredient Substitution Tips:

    Fernbrake Shiitake mushrooms, broccoli stems

Bellflower root Julienned radish or cabbage

    Spinach Kale or canned spinach

By creatively substituting local ingredients, bibimbap becomes a truly global dish that can be enjoyed anywhere in the world.

Bibimbap is more than just food mixed in a bowl.

It’s about the harmony of differences where each ingredient contributes its own flavor, color, and texture to create something greater than the sum of its parts.

In this one bowl, you’ll find the Korean philosophy of balance, health, and togetherness.

Dolsot bibimbap served in a hot stone pot, known for its crispy rice and intensified flavors.
